16/2008. The Danish Police Reform

The report is about the police reform and how the Ministry of Justice, the national police and the police districts have prepared the reform and implemented and followed up on the reform up to now.

12 new police districts were established in accordance with the police reform that took effect on 1 January 2007. The objective of the reform was to create the best possible conditions for a more modern and effective police force.

In the spring of 2008, the media reported that the number of unsolved cases had increased since 2006, that the police made fewer charges, allegedly due to the police reform, and that the number of reports received by the police was on the increase. On 17 September 2008, the Public Accounts Committee therefore requested Rigsrevisionen to conduct a major study of the police reform.

In the study, Rigsrevisionen has assessed the preparation and follow up on the police reform, the police's performance management and finance management, and whether the Danish Folketing (parliament) was informed correctly about the implementation of the police reform.
